Thought of the
Month for May/June 2003 (cont.) Diagnosing the Sick Church
(3) Confession, possibly, is necessary. National and corporate confession, many times, is in order. Daniel, as he prayed, confessed the sins of his people as well as his sins. Many need to remember the admonition to "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." (James 5:16) Others need to heed Jesus' words. "Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift." (Matt. 5:23 - 24)
(4) Listen for God's guidance. As the small Samuel was encouraged by Eli, to say to the Lord, "Speak; for thy servant heareth." (I Sam. 3:10)
Listen to the Voices Who Speak Into Your Life
Wise men listen to the counsel of other trusted friends. Everyone needs an accountability partner that can and does speak into his or her lives. Prayerfully consider what they say and advise.
Embrace and Give High Visibility to the Five Fold Ministry
The church recognizes the biblical authority of the pastor, as shepherd of the flock, and even the chain of command that Christ acknowledged.(Rev. 2 - 3) Room must be made for the complete five-fold ministry to speak into the life of the local assembly, including that of the apostle and the prophet.(Eph. 4:11) This is not to be feared when presented in the New Testament order. Otherwise it would become counter productive. Properly administered, it will equip the body of believers for Christian service and build the body!
Allow Correction When Needed
Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way; and he that hateth reproof shall die. (Prov. 15:10) What more needs to be said!
